Project idea

The idea is to look at a large scale market square that caters to all the classes and categories of people and also to respond to the diverse needs of the people in the ward by integrating the business functions of the markets with the public spaces such as plazas and squares.

Need for the project

The ward as a whole lacks public markets and spaces and one can only find vendors and hawkers scattered across. The culture of the lively markets, that integrates itself within the working of the city, has widely been replaced by the boxy malls, devoid of culture. This establishes the need for market squares in the ward which integrates the business function of the markets with the public spaces.

Objective of the project

To cater to the vast demography of the ward with a large scale market square, that creates an organized space for a large amount of vendors present in the ward and also to create a common ground for the public, providing their daily essentials, as well as spaces for interaction and recreation.

1. First criteria: Site should have a large expanse (1 acre minimum).

2. Second criteria: Site should have a commercial land use.

3. Third criteria: Site should have multiple means of accessibility.

4. Fourth criteria: Site should have possibility of multiple entries.

5. Fifth criteria: Site caters to a wide diversity and demographic.

6. Sixth criteria: Site can be fully pedestrian ideally or favouring minimum vehicular movement within

• Area of the site - 62727 sqm

• Main access roads are Outer ring road, Doddanekundi main road

• Key features are:

1. The site slopes down towards the doddenakundi lake. 2. A rajakaluve is present, which runs through the site. 3. A slum is present in the site. 4. The landmarks around are: Doddenakundi lake, Rainbow Hospital, Soul space arena and IEDB Mall.
