Sustainable Urban Mobility

Mythili Nair | Accessible, safe pedestrian and bicycle paths linking bus stops to residential areas through a commercial zone would promote sustainable transport and pedestrian movement.

Project description

Project idea

To improve last-mile connectivity between the residential areas and bus stops by providing better pedestrian and bicycle amenities along existing commercial axes, creating a safer, more accessible route to the bus stop, thus improving public spaces and use of public transport.

Need for the project

A major deterrent to the use of public transport is poor infrastructure. The bus stops in the ward are neglected, and their placement causes vehicular congestion. Access to them is along badly maintained footpaths with building and vendor encroachment that take up walking space and discourage people from using them. Most people, therefore, prefer private vehicles, which increases the density of traffic.

Objective of the project

To improve connectivity to the bus stops, by creating routes that are pedestrian and bicycle-friendly, promoting sustainable movement and allowing easy access to the bus stops for a diverse range of people, while also creating a livelier commercial zone that is integrated with the residential zone.

Site selection criteria

1. The selected route must connect the residential area to the bus stop.

2. The route provides a continuous transition from a residential street, to a commercial mixed-use road, to a bus stop on the main road.

3. The route passes through a commercial or mixed-use area.

4. There should be low-density roads that can accommodate diverted vehicular traffic from the site.

5. The route is used by a diverse range of users.
